Television Execs may have cooled on reality TV but the competition is heating up between the two teams in the latest episode of Celebrity Chip Shop (Monday). With only three weeks remaining, the Red Shop and the Blue Shop are waging a bitter war to drum up custom and its the viewer that benefits. In a particularly amusing incident we see the trouble that Keith Harris gets in to when he refuses to remove Orville when serving a customer and the ensuing complaints about the green fur in his gravy. Elsewhere Ann Widdecomes batter is surprisingly smooth and the resulting fish is a triumph. Which team will succeed? It’s too close to call.
The tension was almost too much to bear when I sat down to watch the season finale of the latest hot US import The Womb Surfer (Tuesday). If you haven’t been following it (have you been under a rock?), it’s the story of foetal detective Landau McGarnekell. McGarnekell has the ability to ‘surf’ between the wombs of women and uses telepathy to control them and persue his investigations. What started as a gimmicky show (the CGI embryo is amazing – humourously voiced by veteran voice-over artist Chuck Murraymint) has developed into a complex treatise on the human condition. Will the Uteran Avenger manage to solve the murder before he is given birth to? I’m not going to spoil it for you, but it ends on one hell of a cliff hanger.
And so the decline of once popular soap Peabody Place (Monday, Tuesday – 2 episodes, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday -3 episodes, Saturday, Sunday omnibus) continues. The latest attempt to boost ratings is the Brian\Beryl\Achmed love triangle stroryline that reaches its conclusion this week. I’m sure it will come as a surprise to no-one to learn that Brian reveals he used to be a woman and that Beryl says she is pregnant with Brian AND Achmeds babies (no-one saw THAT coming! Tsk Tsk). Fridays final episode ends in one of the most shocking (and gory) scenes seen in a mainstream British drama. And I still thought “So what?”.
Until the next time, keep watching your screens.
