‘Japanese Girl’ warns against over-Westernisation. Her hair resembles a helmet as ‘protection’ of eastern collectivistic socieites and how they are under threat from a Western Individualisitc society. ‘Japanese Girl’ reminds us, against the taken-for-granted ‘truth’ that Western ‘ideals’ are not ‘ideals’ for all and invites us to think about the cultural and historical contexts that other people from other countries operate within, rather than from our egocentric western perspective.
God, you’re good. You’re able to literally look deep within the soul of a piece and deconstruct it with aplomb. Tears are falling on my keyboard as I write this; you bring such joy and light to the world.
