The scene opens at a church fete.  Paul, a doe-eyed boy with a guitar, approaches John, a slightly older, sarcastic-looking boy, also with a guitar.

PAUL: Hello

JOHN: Alright, la.

PAUL: Do you play the guitar?

JOHN: Yeah, do you?

PAUL: Yeah.  Do you want to hear a song I wrote?

JOHN: Yes please.

Paul plays his song for John.  It’s really good.

JOHN:  That’s really good.

PAUL: Thanks.  Have you got any songs you can play for me?

JOHN: Yes.

John plays his song for Paul.  It’s also really good.

PAUL:  Your song is also really good.

JOHN: Ta.  Do you want to join a band and go to Hamburg?

PAUL: That sounds fab.

JOHN: OK, see you later.

PAUL: Bye!

One Of My Favourite Bands…

One of my favourite bands are the much underrated John Bradley’s Illicit Bird Table.  I first discovered their seminal 1969 album “CanYou Pass The Screwdriver, Julie?” when I was about 18.  I’d just finished the mock exam for my Social Anthropology A-level and I was completely stressed out.  I went round to my mate Bazza’s house and he decided to play me one of his dad’s vinyl LPs.

That record changed my life.

The opening track, “Terry Nutkins”, literally opened my eyes to the endless possibilities that life holds.  The 12 minute guitar-solo intro was like a trip to a Hoseasons holiday park, but with some cool kids instead of your parents.  Then the lyrics kicked in and they kicked me in the head: “He’s really wild/He’s gonna put on a show/A really wild, wild show/I want you to know.”

Mesmerising.

The rest of the album didn’t disappoint and it got me through my exams like some aural brain food.  I heartily recommend that you go out and buy it today!

Straight Outta Swansea

Some of you may remember the post MC Lizzy Duke, from October last year, in which I discussed the hit song “Straight Outta Swansea”.

Well, my good friend Dr Angel and her band 123 Bumming! have done an amazing cover version of the song.  I urge you to go listen to it by following the link below:

I mean it.  Go listen to it now.

Jazz Confusion

As a big afficianado of jazz music, I like to push the boundaries and listen to the hardest, most challenging tunes available. In my quest to stay on top of the jazz world, I try to read all of the relevant literature.

Imagine my surprise, in a recent visit to the newsagents, when I asked for the hardest jazz mags available, and I was presented with something else entirely. I’ve not been able to sleep since.

Post From The Past – February 2008

Here they are:

3. Roy Walker Spangled Banner - A beautiful Catchphrase based song.

2. Penis Frenzy - Lots of cock.

1. Crowfinger - It’s the lyrics, for the theme tune, of a spy film, about the Crow.

Sorry to be so brief, but I’ve got a lot of catching up to do. Laters.
